Why would anyone with such a lovely name as Brian Brendan Madden want to change it to BB Tenor? Actually, it is but a diversion to a simpler point of reference. You see, when you Google the name Brian Madden, you find it applies to everyone from a former Naval Academy quarterback, to a poet, painter, doctor, computer geek, lawyer, guitar player, and a real estate guy. BB gets tired, too, of people asking if he's related to that coaching dude on TV. Uh, no. 'BB Tenor' is much pithier and fits snugly onto one's palate.
Brian B. was born in Hollywood, California to a pair of show biz wannabes. Mom tried vaudeville, Dad owned the Irish Book Stall, and he was best man at one of Louis Prima's weddings; also, Dad persuaded Muggsy Spanier to be baby B's godfather.
Anyway, when BB was a wee lad growing up in Utica,NY, his mom tried to get him to take piano lessons, but he was too stupid, so he ended up with a tenor, instead.

What's also convenient here, is the fact you can listen to the entire track, before you decide.
One album in particular, The MaddScatter Meets The Bard of Bop, should have the songs played in sequence, for two of the tracks (Song Titles a la Bop, and More Song Titles a la Bop) are produced that way.

Jazz Broadcaster's Video

A Jazz Affair is a video all about how one person became involved with the most magical of all musics, even before birth. For broadcast journalist Brian Madden, it was in his parents' blood, and they passed it on to him, like it or not. But he did grow to like it, and to love it.
His father, Richard, grew up in Cicero, Illinois, when the Austin High Gang was struttin' its barbeque from the influences of Satch and King Oliver. His mother was a vaudevillian, dancer/singer, growing up in upstate New York, with a dancing partner sister, and three brothers, all musicians...piano, tenor, clarinet. When Madden was a wee lad, Muggsy Spanier became his godfather; from there he tells the story in this one-hour video that chronicles his eventual career as a radio/TV reporter/anchorman, interviewing and reporting on the greatest of the jazz musicians, including those with whom he got to play his tenor.

When Louis Armstrong died in 1971, Madden reported the obituary on Channel 5 in New York City. From there, he reported on the funeral of Thelonious Monk; interviewed Count Basie, Lionel Hampton, Elvin Jones, Stan Getz, Milt Hinton, Barry Harris, Stanley Clarke, Jimmy Rushing, and many others, all documented in his video. Included are the autographs of Armstrong, Artie Shaw, Tommy Dorsey, Chu Berry, Fletcher Henderson, plus Duke and the entire Ellington band of 1939.

Nowadays, BB plays his tenor in upstate locales around Woodstock, New York. A Jazz Affair video is available for viewing here and in-person at clinics, clubs, classrooms, and other venues where the history of jazz is part of a program, or of interest to true fans of the music.
