My name is Shakti. I was born in Gainesville, Florida but raised in India--a few different towns--from New Delhi all the way to a tiny village in South India with less than 100 houses clustered around an ancient temple. I then moved to Canada and finally back to the U.S. to attend UC Berkeley.

My songs reflect my various homes--an Eastern sense of eternity mixed in with solid American wisdom and earthiness.

Bio

My songs reflect my various homes--an Eastern sense of eternity and mystery seems to be mixed in with solid American wisdom and earthiness.

My maternal grandfather was a writer and inspired me early on with Blake and the Indian poet Tagore. My maternal great uncle was a very successful abstract painter--I used to tag along with him on tours of artists' studios and galleries.

I enjoy the process of painting a picture with each song--sometimes it's a watercolor painting with misty edges (for example "Dusky Rose"), sometimes it's a woman giving her sisters deep and wise advice on love ("When It's Real, Goes So Deep"); sometimes it's like a hymn that never ages ("A Heart Takes time to Heal").

Whether it's the journey, the hearth and home, the enchanting wild gypsy woman or the lessons of life, the creative process brings me more joy than I could put into words and I am grateful beyond measure for whatever force or creative spirit allows me to translate these experiences into words and music.
