Chubbed Up

This 14-song disc from San Diego s Bigfellas features a lit bit of every style imaginable. At first it seems like a rock record with the Hornsbyesque opening track, California King. After that, Chubbed Upthrows everything but the kitchen sink at the listener: groovy horn shuffle of Moving Day, a golf rap On The Green, Beck-Beatles stoner flavor on 4:20, the Bacharach style ballad Wish You Knew, a Gershwin nod I Wish That I Were Gay, the power country of Reinventing The Wheel, an old-timey waltz, politically conscious guitars, space feedback, a bluegrass version of a 70 s orchestral rock classic and by the time you hear the French accordion-fiddle of Vous Ne Parlez Francais, you d swear this was a compilation album. The Bigfellas in their regional history have been known for their humor as evidenced being termed Zevonesque , Barenaked Ladies without the wimpiness and Steely Dan for the Pabst Blue Ribbon set . This CD in all of its fully-realized pop production will be around for a long, long time.
