Bio
In the aftermath of several great New Brunswick, NJ bands spontaneously combusting in the Fall of 1997, Akasa came to the rescue as an acoustic coffeehouse duo featuring Gerry Perlinski on guitar/vocals and Tony Kroposky on bongos. At this time, Gerry had already been a staple on the New Brunswick music scene for nearly 6 years now. By adding his guitar heroics to such New Brunswick notables as folk-punk pranksters A Halo Called Fred, ethereal folkie Catherine Moon, bluesy funksters The Rubber Biscuit All Star Band and for a brief period, alternative favorites Bionic Rhoda, he had formed a strong and eclectic musical resume. Childhood friend and partner in crime, Tony Kroposky, a.k.a. "Tiny", drummer and then newly anointed low-end theorist, had also played an integral part as bassist in the latter incarnation of A Halo Called Fred amongst a myriad of other mind-altering musical projects.
As Akasa's popularity grew over the next year or two, so did the need to expand their sound. Tony decided to ditch the bongos and switch to bass full time. They were then joined by drummer Raj Sharma. Raj is the son of world renowned tabla player, Bihari Sharma, best known for spicing up Miles Davis’ landmark album, "Bitches Brew". Since recording a 3 song demo in 1998 with award-winning producer, Plinky Giglio (Styx, Glen Burtnick), they had also jumped head-first into promoting their music online with their website www.akasamusic.com and had received an overwhelming positive response.
