Acclaimed roots music artist William Lee Ellis is a fingerpicking guitarist and songwriter who has been hailed a “wizard on steel strings” (Blues Revue) and "one of our finest contemporary songwriters" (Living Blues). His latest album, the Yellow Dog release Ghost Hymns, was a Blues Music Awards nominee for Acoustic Blues Album of the Year and proclaimed one of 2023’s best records by DownBeat, Blues Music magazine, and others. The son of banjo/fiddle composer Tony Ellis, William holds a PhD in ethnomusicology, has played Mountain Stage, MerleFest, and the Kennedy Center among many venues, and is a guitar-instructing alum of Jorma Kaukonen’s Fur Peace Ranch and Augusta Blues Week.

Ghost Hymns garners Blues Music Awards nomination

Ellis's latest album, 2023's Ghost Hymns (Yellow Dog Records) earned a nomination for Acoustic Blues Album of the Year at the 2024 Blues Music Awards. It was also hailed as one of 2023's best by Downbeat and Blues Magazine, while Acoustic Guitar calls Ellis a "masterful genre-bender who sounds completely at home in whatever style he tackles."
