Dingman grew up in the New Hampshire countryside, in a little town of a thousand people. He spent his time wandering the woods, drawing, or plunking out melodies on his father’s piano. Almost entirely isolated from mainstream culture, Dingman first considered the existence of God when he heard his mother’s Beatles records.

At 21, he picked up a guitar. This time, Dylan inspired him. Says Dingman, “I was at Harvard at the time, but the summer I heard Freewheeling made school seem beside the point.”

Moving to California, Dingman at first thought of himself more as a writer than a songwriter. “I think music affected me so deeply that I didn't dare approach songwriting. Not yet.” Instead, Dingman wrote poetry and made his living as a screenwriter for a time, trying hard to keep music on the side. It didn't work.

Americana-UK reviewed an advance copy of Dingman's new CD "Heartbreak Sampler" with the header "Superlative lyrical angst and heartbreak" and gave it 8 out of 10 stars.
