Her Background
Susie was born in Oakland, California to Chinese immigrant parents. From age 3 she was raised in San Francisco's Chinatown where her family owned a sewing factory.
From an early age, Susie had a natural ability with words. Her elementary school teacher loved a poem she wrote and copied it into every student's Christmas card to their parents. Music seemed to come naturally too, she found, from 2 consecutive summer scholarships to learn violin at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. And with a natural inclination to sing, she sang in the elementary school "glee club" and heartily in the sewing factory as she hemmed up skirts and shirts, inspiring the ladies working nearby to sing along.
Unfortunately, her traditional Chinese upbringing meant that helping in the family business and making money took priority over developing her creative potential. From junior high school on, she didn't do much in music beyond listening to radio and buying records - like most kids her age. It wasn't until after college and years working for Bechtel, a large engineering firm where she wrote technical proposals, that she realized something was missing from her life. She took a leave of absence to see where her heart would take her.
A week later, she bought a Yamaha baby grand piano - which she didn't even know how to play! One thing led to another - from piano lessons to voice lessons to songwriting lessons. Now, after years of dedication, inspiration and perspiration, her debut CD "shameLess" is finished!
Susie currently sings and guest speaks in Bay Area venues, collaborating with other writers, musicians, and institutions. She designs her own performance outfits and provides styling services by special request. She also keeps busy with her daughter, and lots of gym workouts to stay healthy and happy.
