Aaron Penton started playing guitar at age 13, after seeing Metallica live in 1989. His first guitar teacher was primarily a blues player, and introduced young Aaron to Stevie Ray Vaughan, Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters. While he maintained his passion for the intensity and aggression of heavier music, he started focusing on playing blues. By the age of 17, he was joining his guitar teacher on stage, and by the following year he had joined his first working band. The next few years were spent on the road, playing rock/country and top forty covers.
Aaron then got the opportunity to host a nationally aired TV show , on which he would jam with Big Sugar's Gordie Johnson. This caught the eye of Powder Blues Band pianist Willie MacCaulder, who was playing with Juno award winner Harpdog Brown and the Bloodhounds at the time. Harpdog was looking for a new guitarist, and Willie recommended Aaron for the job. The quintet headed to the U.S., touring the Pacific North West.
