Three Bar Town

Story Behind The Song

6 months following college graduation and leaving the band I'd played in for 5 years, I headed out of Seattle with an acoustic guitar, when my car broke-down at the top of Snoqualmie pass. I waited for 4 hours on a tiny strip of habitat that had one gas station and 3 bars. No money for the bar, so I sat in the car and wrote a song.

Song Description

Stripped-down arrangement, Acoustic bass, acoustic guitar, harmonizing male vocals, and electric guitar. Lilting harmonica at the end. The character comes to a realization that he is alone in life, driving aimlessly, with many of life's aspects left undefined or undone. With this realization, there is a sense of taking a fresh start ... after this one last round at the bar, maybe.

Lyrics

I'm not stuck yet in the middle of nowhere,
but I'm on the road to getting there,
and back half a mile I realized
there's nobody in the passenger side.

If there's one too many knots
in a life full of loose-ends that I'd never bothered to tie;
if we all take a drive,
thinking about nothing,
to tie up our loose-ends,
this is probably mine.

Broken down in a three bar town,
pouring piece-of-mind from a bottle,
as a cigarette's burning down;
let's have another round.
