Dreams Are Like Fire

Story Behind The Song

This song was recorded live at Don Ross Productions in Eugene, OR with additional tracking by MGrecords.

Song Description

This song is about keeping hope alive and continuing to follow your dreams. The whole song can be summed up in the one line "Dreams are like fire/if there ain't no fire burning then you're better off dead." Keep aiming for something or grow stagnant. This song comes out of the doubts I battle with about being a touring songwriter. The more I am away from home, the less whole I feel. We must keep our dreams alive but at what cost? This song questions the balance of love and hope. The protagonist is pleading, "Keep your love alive" while he continues to work and more times than not, feels like he is failing.

Lyrics

I've been waking up slowly in a world I just can't figure out
These blues, they come early
Like a headache from the whiskey trying to drown me out

I've been moving like a factory man I've been working so hard but I can't pay my debts
I'm bending over backwards
I've been working for your love, have I earned it yet?

There are lovers up and down the avenue Sheltered by the wind and it's blowing cold

There's a spotlight baby on my heart tonight
Gotta' make it home quick, gonna' make it right
There's a lock box baby, on my warmth for you
Gonna make it home honey, gonna' make it soon
Just keep your love alive, keep your love alive

I've been running out of dreams lately and that ain't no way to ever get ahead Dreams are like fire, if there ain't no fire burning then you're better off dead

When the night grows feet running crooked in the street and the marionette shadows are dancing in the sleet

There's a spotlight baby on my heart tonight Gotta' make it home quick, gonna' make it right There's a lock box baby, on my warmth for you Gonna make it home honey, gonna' make it soon Just keep your love alive, keep your love alive
