Story Behind The Song
This song was conceived in a French museum. I started thinking about the bassline as a large group of cellos. (I still kind of wish we could have recorded it that way.) I tried to write down the notes in my head on a pad of paper, estimating each of their values with surprising accuracy. (It was really a fluke, I can hardly read music) When I got back to the hostel I found the notes and everything that was in my head earlier (lyrics, melodies) came back to me very quickly.
When I was back in Toronto, I added the bridge. I wanted to create a slightly dissonant cat and mouse scene. The guitars being mice and the bass/piano serving as the large clumsy cat. After finishing it, I was too stubborn to leave it out.

about hitting the road to follow great ambition, in spite of the doubters left behind.

Lyrics
Maniac
Come on, come on, shallow-maker
Come on, come on, queasy-finger
Live the secrets you?ve been keeping
Why should you be sleeping?
I get lost to feel so free
I don?t flow in fields of greed
I?m just sick for what I need
Tell me what you need
In my heart I?m all alone
I?m ten thousand miles from home
Don?t you tell me how I?ve grown
Chorus:
You can tell all my friends I'll be alright
I?m a maniac on the road tonight
You can keep it in mind, I?m out of sight
I?m a maniac on the road tonight
When they think that I?m down I?m up in lights
I?m a maniac on the road tonight
And I?m taking the corners every night
Like a maniac on the road tonight
Maybe I?m tired cause I?m shit outta luck
Diggin? for gold, but it?s dumb that I struck
Maybe I?m wrong but I don?t give a fuck
Why should you be sleeping?
Kiss me and tell me to stay outta trouble
Keep me in mind while you roll on the double
Maybe I?m glad just to live in this bubble
Tell me what you need
In my heart I?m all alone
I?m ten thousand miles from home
Don?t you tell me how I?ve grown
Chorus:
