Winter Leaves

Story Behind The Song

Justin Burris and myself widdled this song out of a lot of material I was compiling. The process was an involved conversation and analysis spanning a week. The result is here.

Song Description

Justin Burris' short film "Winter Leaves" is a dialogueless, beautiful, and challenging film to compose to. I choose a sound palette rich with surreal or "subconscious' tones and beats. Ultimately the music floats and rush, like smoke or falling leaves. Funny how this works, huh? I used drums for her heart, rings and droning bells for her conscious mind trying to keep cool (she probably has a headache, I had thought) and piano for triumph, or rather - resolution. Because the whole thing is like an unresolved chord until the film ends, which is challanging to make seem active and virile as a piece of music.
