Seeing Eye To Eye, Maybe Toe To Toe

Story Behind The Song

It was written as a married female, reflecting back on those days of trying to find a perfect mate, a lot of the time in clubs and bars, and how many countless trials and errors occur before you finally meet your match...some of those occasions end up being comical...this is one of those times.

Song Description

Two single people at a club, he's trying his best to pick her up and she's laying out her rules of engagement. She has certain things that she expects from a man, he has very few of those attributes, but he talks a good game and eventually, albeit, clumsily, he wins her over...maybe. It's a fun song, a fabulously fun performance, and an upbeat blues tempo. People who have heard this song smile the entire time. It's become a fan favorite.

(Male/Female duet, singers Edlene Hart and Sly Geralds, ©2010 F&G Music, Suzanne Foschino & Sly Geralds)

SLY: "hey baby, what you drinkin'?
EDLENE: "Well...what you buyin'"?
SLY: "Can I talk to you, for a minute?"
EDLENE: "as long as you aint' lyin'"
SLY: "How can a man like me get with a woman as fine as you?"
EDLENE: "I've got some rules honey you need to know
We need to see eye to eye
Before we could be toe to toe."

EDLENE CHORUS:
Ya gotta have money in the bank
Time on your hands
You got to know just what to push
To take me to the promised land.
Rock me when I want to
Roll me when I please
Know when to stand up to me
And when to drop to your knees
Cause these are my rules...
If you still want me - let me know

EDLENE: "So what you think of that?"
SLY: "baby, you know that ain't fair"
EDLENE: "rules are rules"
SLY: "but, I-I-I ain't got much money"
EDLENE: "well, do you got anything I need?"
SLY: "I mean, I'm like UPS, I'm always on time...I'm like Big Yellow, lemme tell you about it, baby"

SLY CHORUS:
Don't have much money in the bank
Not much time on my hands
But I know just what to push
To take to the promised land
I can rock you when you want to
I'll will roll you if you please
And by the time I get done wit ya
You'll be beggin on yo knees
Cause I ain't got no rules
If you still want me, let me know

SLY: So what do you think now?
EDLENE:- "Maybe it can work, Sly"
SLY: "you know, baby, I'm here for you, you know that, right?"
EDLENE: "ha, you wouldn't be the first to say that."
SLY: "we could spend just a little bit of time with each other, ya know."
EDLENE: "then you better spend your time right."
SLY: "see I got about 20-30 minutes of good loving in me"
EDLENE: "ooh, you can take me home tonight...my rules were made to be broken
SLY: "that's what I'm talking about, now listen, I got some money, I got a van down by the river, because my money just ain't right right now"
EDLENE: oh no, no, we gotta talk about this some more, let's talk about it"
