Song DescriptionA song questioning God about life and death and a higher meaning.
Story Behind the SongI have been an emergency department physician for over 20 years and this song was started out of frustration several years ago. My cowriter, an emergency department nurse, took it to a different place and help resolve the the angst initially felt in the beginning of the song.
Lyrics
I've seen some things in my life that I wish I could forget.
I've seen so many faces on the edge of life's last breath.
Many times I wonder just how random seems life's fate.
Too many souls have left this world too soon for heaven's gates.
Sometimes I turn and toss at night. No comfort can I find
Just never understanding what goes on in God's mind.
Now it seems the days are darker and the air's thick to breathe
While Lords of war, they rule this world with famine and disease.
When brother murders brother, there's not one of us that's safe.
While children cry and walk the streets, it's clear we've lost our faith.
We sacrifice our innocent and perpetrate our crimes
So how can we ever fathom what goes on in God's mind
I want a higher purpose and some meaning to be found
So, I'm praying for an answer to help me see this now.
And I just need one good reason to help me ease the pain
And I promise no more questions, please don't let it be in vain.
Now In my greatest hour of need, when all my will was drained
Like a distant match light through the void, a still, small voice then came
More felt than heard, still I knew the words. Soothing comfort soon I knew.
For my God was there as he'd always been. And by faith he'd see me through
For there is a higher purpose and there's meaning you can find
So it's not for me to question what goes on in God's mind
