Story Behind The Song
I wrote this song for my daughter Colette. I was a non-custodial parent that lived far from his child. It is song born out of depression, guilt and longing.
Song Description
The character in the song is a distant father to a child, both physically and emotionally. He ponders the future of his relationship with his daughter and hopes in the end she will come to know her father better.

Lyrics
4 O' clock in the morning, the dawn's on the rise
and I'm lying here--barely closed my eyes
I get out of bed and light a cigarette
Smoke rings and tears begin to cloud my eyes
Baby bottles and bows
A leftover bassonet
Is all I've got to show
That this once was home
Now, I wait by the phone
Crayon colored cards, all stuck to the wall
A Kodak moment from every fall
A slow-motion replay of what I try to forget
Was it something I said...How I regret
My long absence...I missed your baby steps
And "God Only Knows" plays on the stereo
Reminding me of the things I do not know
Will she come, will I ever know
The person inside before I have to go...
The clock now is ticking with every beat
I'm one step further from my defeat
I wait for the day when I can hear you say,
"Hello, it's me, can we be friends?"
But where do I start?
I guess from the heart
Page 1 begins at 44
My life will be restored
When you knock on my door
