Story Behind The Song
I spent 7 years in the military. As the war broke out, I had friends who were called up to deploy. After all our "gung ho" training, constantly getting ready mentally and physically, my friends reported that although they were ready to go, the biggest feeling was fear. Not of dying, but of leaving their families behind.
Song Description
Every soldier is trained to be prepared to give it all if duty calls. But which is scarier--going to war or leaving your loved ones?

Lyrics
Verse 1:
Don't go away
She said to me yesterday
As I was packing up to go
Write you everyday
She promised me
As I walked through that door
Please, baby, stay
She cried out
Who needs the war?
But there's a yearning in my heart tonight
And I can't breathe and I can't fight
Cause I'm burning deep inside to make it home
Chorus:
So, Father, show me the way
Cause I'm afraid to face today
Even though yesterday is gone, gone, gone
Well, there's got to be a way
To get up and face today
I'm just so scared to think that
Tomorrow you'll be gone...
...Away
Verse 2:
So I'll retire the tracks I've laid
Admire the mess I've made
To get this far
Discover the way for me to say
Forever is not so far--so far away
To keep me apart from you
So if I don't make it home tonight
Don't cry for me--I'll be alright
You know I'm never going down
Without a fight
(Chorus)
Bridge/Break/Jam:
Gone away
Gone away
So go all the way today
Go all the way today
Cause I love you
You know I love you
But I can't stay
I love you
I love you but I can't stay... away
