My Blue Guitar

Story Behind The Song

This song was actually conceived in a guitar shop in Sydney, Australia. I had been looking at acoustic guitars and found one that I particularly liked. It just happened to be blue in color. I left the shop and was returning at a later time to pick up "My Blue Guitar". Right there, at that moment, I realized I had a song to write. Some of my best writing, I believe, is in this song............... "That echoes from the hollow of my blue guitar"............I really like that line. Of course the word play...."I pick it up, I pick it down" is a key component of the hook as well.

Song Description

My Blue Guitar sets the stage early with an outrageous intro reminiscent of life in the deep south - moonshiners - gators - cajun cookin - and the relentless odor of the swamp. Highlighted with electric guitar, dobro, and B-3 organ, My Blue Guitar turns the tables on relationships gone bad with the guitar as the scapegoat, musically reflecting the true emotions of a broken man. Try as he might, there's no going back and no way to avoid the demons that will haunt him through eternity.

My Blue Guitar

This guitar don?t sound the same as it once did

When I?d sit and play your favorite songs for you

Since you left, the tempo?s changed, there?s only heartache

That echoes from the hollow of my blue guitar

I pick it up, I pick it down

Nothin?s as lonesome as the sound

Keeping rhythm with the breaking of my heart

I play it fast, I play it slow

There?s just one sound flows from the soul

Misery and sorrow, lonesome blue guitar

Emptiness, despair, and pain ? a reflection

Of dreams that never lived to see the light of day

Six strings cryin? out in vain, I still love you

Memories turn days gone by to dreams of blue

I pick it up, I pick it down

Nothin?s as lonesome as the sound

Keeping rhythm with the breaking of my heart

I play it fast, I play it slow

There?s just one sound flows from the soul

Misery and sorrow, lonesome blue guitar

bridge:
Your tender kiss, your hazel eyes, lost in the shadows of my mind

Forever laid to rest, forever faded blue
