Keep It Around
------------------------
Malcolm Sanders/ © 1998 Matthew Phillips, BMI
Me and my father lived different lives
I wasn't always what he'd want me to be
He grew up a poor man in a harder world
I grew up with fast food and T.V.
He though I never understood why he held on to his world
And things that never meant that much to me
He thought I couldn't see the value in a simple thing
Or even what a simple thing could be. He'd say:
(Chorus #1)
I surely wouldn't want to lose this
It shouldn't be let go to waste
All it needs is a little work
I think I'll keep it around (repeat)
My father and I grew apart somehow
And hardly ever spoke except briefly
He had his ways and I had mine
He would bury and I would flee
I thought he never understood why I let go of my world
And even things that meant so much to me
I though he couldn't see the simple value of any "thing"
Or even how simple things could be
But one summer the unexpected came
My father dropped to his knees that day
And only then did I race to his side
And on my own knees heard myself say:
(Chorus #2)
I surely wouldn't want to lose you
Our love shouldn't be let go to waste
All it needs is a little work
I sure want to keep you around
I do want to keep you around
The years hve gone since my father died
But not before we found a lot we shared
And every time I find a thing with memories
I hear a simple thought run through my head:
(Repeat Chorus #1, last line repeat with this change:)
I think I'll keep...him..around
