Story Behind The Song
Based on a real-life, short-lived relationship with an unavailable man. I wanted to capture the transformative, awakening power that love can have, even if it's not meant to last. I also wanted to capture that "woe is me" quality of old torch songs. Thus the choice of only vocal and piano...sad, lonely, sung in a dark room.
Song Description
In the style of standard torch songs. Slow swing ballad about the love of the singer's life, whom the singer can't be with. The lover is either married or otherwise unavailable and has moved on.

Lyrics
I was doing my best, safe in my nest,
resting in everydays.
I stayed on the ground, never strayed, so I?d found
nowhere else to be.
But when you sailed through my meadow
on your way to what you had to do,
I dared to see there was more to me
when you passed through.
You coaxed me to sing, unfroze my wings
and stoked my life with meaning.
Though you couldn?t be mine, I thought I?d be fine
with whatever time we shared.
But when you led me to
that siren sky of ?I need you,?
I dared not feel how lonely I?d fly
when you passed through.
BRIDGE:
You tapped my passion,
unwrapped my song.
Now your lark lies quietly dying
without you gliding along.
I?m not doing my best, back in my nest,
pressed into everydays.
My face to the ground, I can?t bear to turn around
to no sound or sight of you.
I?m confused: Is it better never knowing
or glowing while you knew?
I dared to know though I knew I?d lose
when you passed through.
(Piano solo)
TAG:
I?m confused: Is it better never knowing
or glowing while you knew?
I flew my first true flight and maybe my last
when you passed through.
