John Marshall

Story Behind The Song

I wrote this song after reading an article in the paper about a few couples who were stationed in North Carolina after 9/11. They're husbands were the first to go overseas and when they came back both the wifes and husbands were dead. It was said that the drugs they took to prevent diseases casued they're brain to have a chemical imbalance and they're husband's killed theyre wives then themselves. They were both loyal couples who loved eachother very much. For some reason the event really went unoticed in most news stations and I wrote a story to reflect how much of an impact it made on me. It is more or less a tribute and a reflection of the times and the military more than anything.

Song Description

John Marshall - Words and Music written by Ken Macy (c) Library Of Congress

I'm going to tell you a story, from a lost forgotten soul.
Who stood tall and dark, with eyes made of coal.
He lived with his wife, love of his life, when he got the call.
And now we go behind the wall of John Marshall.

His wall began to build on a cool autumn day.
When John got a call, that was to send him on his way.
A soldier was he, proud as could be, with medals on his chest.
He kissed his wife goodbye, as she began to cry, and went to join the rest.

Bridge
John went over to his jet, and overseas he flew.
For on that eerie autumn day, the skies were colored blue.
The wall was building higher, as his jet landed down.
To the battlefield he traveled, where he was destined to be bound.

Four days he slept in trenches, contemplating life.
John started writing letters, to his lovely wife.
And now the wall was built, when the letter left his hand.
For he was surrounded by darkness and sleeping in sand.

As the new day broke out, so did the cries of war.
A sight John as seen, in many battles before.
As the front line charged, life flashed before his eyes.
He can already hear, and already fear, his wife's last good-byes

Bridge:
John climbed over the wall, and began to fire away.
Unlike the times before in prior wars, today wasn't his day.
His gun dropped down to the ground, as the bullet entered John.
Most of what he had known was close to being gone.

John Marshall was rescued by men of the second line.
He was rushed to a tent of aid where his condition was stated fine.
"take this shot" the doctor said "to rid you of disease"
"and you can go see your wife" as he flew back overseas.

John got back home to his life, where it was once before.
But the winds of change had shifted, and helped him close the door.
The thoughts that have entered his mind, are totally deranged.
His wife, Dana Marshall, started to see the change.

Bridge:
"What's wrong with you John Marshall? I don't know you anymore!"" As she tried to get away, she fell upon the floor.
It was a sad day for both of them, a day they soon would dread.
The next day in the "Daily News": "Both Marshall's Found Dead".

And that's the end of the story, from a lost forgotten soul.
Who stood tall and dark, with eyes made of coal.
He lived with is wife, love of his life, when he got the call.
And now we've seen behind the wall of John Marshall.
