The Right Direction

Story Behind The Song

I first had the idea for this song while growing up in the inner city. I began to notice certain patterns surrounding women in a less affluent neighborhood. Many of them seemed to be single mothers and worked too much to really watch over their children. I wondered why this would happen. I never experienced this because I was blessed with both of my parents, but some of my peers weren't as lucky. When I was a teenager when I first saw women being mistreated not only by men but other women as well. This society holds strong to very shovanistic views even in this day and age. The biggest perpretrators of these views are women who for some reason or another believe what they are told. The belief that sex is bad and that a girl who has sex is a whore. While I believe that promiscuity is negative, it isn't viewed as such when referring to a man. So I witnessed girls who fell for the false promises by young boys and ended up being viewed as harlots by their peers or ended up pregnant. It almost no matter how much they tried to correct their ways and or took care of their children, certain people still looked down on them. This is song is dedicated to them. The women who pick themselves up and raised themselves along with their children. To those who don't care what others think and go on with their lives.

THE RIGHT DIRECTION

She was, forgotten, rotten, thought of as
A fucked up past, no class, no cash, at times she had to sell ass
She thought my life blast it, childhood ran past it
No joke she broke her soul, innocence got stole
Now, she used to be cool, we used to be cool
We used to skip school for fun, her life a loaded gun
Till it popped, just like she popped, got caught
After nine months of pain, she couldn’t remember the name
So now she rolls two deep, drops tears in her sleep
Drops time in the wind, so when it ends it begins
Yeah, I remember that ho, that was a long time ago
I used to wonder where she’d go, the lost tormented soul
She had her face to the sun, but her mind in the dark
She’s got her heart with her son, and now she’s looking to start
She broke the chains, rearranged and let freedom arrive
She’s coming home to the light, it was a long, long fight
She took a turn in the right direction
To turn away from her own reflection
And come to terms with how to live with herself
And make it right, before there’s nothing left
(2X)
I know that times are tough, they’ve always been
It seems the day begins, just to check your chin
And every step you take, seems against the wind
Find the strength from within, start it over again
(2X)
She took a turn in the right direction
To turn away from her own reflection
And come to terms with how to live with herself
And make it right, before there’s nothing left
(2X)
She’s hopin’ it’s not too late, got no time to debate
She’s gotta get back on her feet, she’s been the victim of rape
From society, the law, the justice, the raw
Anger she holds from bullshit abroad
But she’s a strong lady, she’s never been celebrated
Congratulations belated, victim of rumors and hated
But you made it, and I appreciate it, you stayed strong
You were lost in a strange place, but you couldn’t stay gone
You’re realizin’ there’s a child that’s dependin’ on you
You’re realizin’ there’s a light leading out of the blue
You’re realizin’ there were lies, now you’re seekin’ the truth
And the only way to find it, is to start it with you.
(2X)
