Lyrics
Hey There Lonely Chicken
Hey There Lonely Chicken
Hey There Lonely Chicken
Hey There Lonely Chicken
I want to tell you a little sad story now, it happened down near southwest California near Alabama, in my home town. I remember one day we were out in the fields on our farm a great big whirlwind blew up out of nowhere and swept the whole farm and all the animals and all the livestock out away into nowhere. There me, ma, pa, and 15 kids and grandma and grandpa, and all there was to eat was my pet chicken. My pet chicken that's all that was left. Anyway, my pa said to me he said "we gotta eat, son"
And I said "Pa? What about Ma Pa?"
He said, "No son, get up them stairs to bed"
And I went up them stairs and those God damn stairs were the longest God damn stairs i ever did climb in my whole God damn life.
And i got to the top of them stairs in my bedroom and put that pillow over my head; but i could still hear those shot gun songs ringing out.. and the chicken was hawking and squawking and squawking and hawking...
...and I remember those days seem to be etched so vividly on the side of my brain, Oh God, that was some kind of pet chicken that pet chicken of mine.... i just wrote this little song in memory of it...
