Fortune Teller

Story Behind The Song

The story behind the song is based on an actual event this summer at a County Fair. When writing the lyrics, I knew I had to stay true to the story because I believe it wanted to be told. The lyrics were written one afternoon for most of the song, but the last verse appeared to me in the middle of the night, which completed the circle . Then a very strange thing occurred. I had played a finger picking melody on my guitar a week before going to the Fair, and I remembered thinking how I liked the sound. It was so random and instant. It seemed like I was given something very special. I would have to use it for a song someday. Then when my lyrics for Fortune Teller needed a melody, I put them together with the guitar picking, and they fit together like they were destined to be. Here was a song of love, that wanted to get out into the world. Then another interesting thing happened. I received a Broadjam email about Kenny Rogers looking for new material. I believed it would be a song for his consideration, so I made this simple recording and I am sending this sketch to you. It perhaps could use a female singing harmony on the chorus where the Fortune Teller speaks. But what I hope for now is that you like it. And believe it worthy to play for Kenny. Thank you Rex. Song Description

The song is about a couple searching for the Fortune Teller at a County Fair, to see what their future will be. Is this true love? Will it last? Do they have a future together? What does she see for them in the Cards? Well, the Fortune Teller's tent was hard to find, but when they finally found her, they went right in to get their fortunes told. They both left her tent full of hope, so content. And so much in love. They stayed together for many years. But when they went back to the Fair, after many summers passed, sadly the Fortune Teller was no longer there. But they both remembered what she told them about life and love. She told them they had nothing to worry about. Everything they hoped for would come true. She told them to take their time. Let the relationship unfold. Do not hurry. She told them love keeps turning up in the Cards. The song is upbeat. Full of hope and promise that two people can find love and stay together

Lyrics

Fortune Teller

They walked arm-in-arm
Past the crowd in line
By the ferris wheel
And dare-devil rides
Past the goats and giant mare
Couples holdin' teddy bears
But the Fortune Teller
Was hard to find

They stopped for a while
To hear cool music
And laugh watchin' men
Dance hypnotized
To share a barbequed kabob
Roasted sweet corn-on-the-cob
But the Fortune Teller
Was hard to find

'Til a full moon
In a sky full o' stars
Guided them to her crystal ball
When they finally found her tent
Well, in they both went
So she could tell
Their fortunes after all

'Oh my darlin's
You don't have to worry
Venus is linin' up with Mars
Oh my darlin's
You don't have to hurry
Love keeps turnin' up
In the Cards"

They both left her tent
Smiling and content
Back out to the smoke
And carnival lights
They stopped to hug each other there
Felt the magic in the air
And hoped...
The Fortune Teller was right

"Oh my darlin's
You don't have to worry
Venus is linin' up with Mars
Oh my darlin's
You don't have to hurry
Love keeps turnin' up
In the Cards"

They still walk arm-in-arm
Many summers pass
They were two lucky ones
To find love at last
When they went back to the Fair
Her tent was no longer there
But the Fortune Teller's words
Were still alive

"Oh my darlin's
You don't have to worry
Venus is linin' up with Mars
Oh my darlin's
You don't have to hurry
Love keeps turnin' up
Love keeps turnin' up
Love keeps turnin' up
In the Cards"

"Just keep lookin' up
Just keep lookin' up
Just keep lookin' up
And follow your hearts"
