Make It Easy

Story Behind The Song

The song is in fact written about a relationship that failed and the reference in the song lyrics which says, "I've one song that hurt you, It never helped me feel BETTER NOW at all" refers to another song called "Better Now" written about the same relationship.

Song Description

While this song is unusual because it has no chorus or strict structure from verse to verse, it's freeform style is perfect for what it sets out to do. Essentially, it's a song that some may say breaks a few rules but it breaks them successfully. The freeform style actually helps add credence to the words for who is there that would be singing about rejection and be more concerned about syllable count and rhyming than they would be about expessing their feelings in a more natural way? During the music only sections just imagine the singer struggling to voice his next words, honest heartfelt words, of rejection, of a failed love and the pain of finding it hard to let it go.

Lyrics

Make It Easy

I don't speak your name.
I don't wonder where you're goin'
I see our friends sometimes.
I'm still not sure who was yours or mine.
I just keep on walkin'.
I won't drive your street
Won't ring your number - don't go near your phone
I do what I can to
MAKE IT EASY

I kill these days with coffee, with cigarettes.
Smoke like I'm on fire.
I don't dare drink for fear I'd drown
Gotta keep my head
What little is left of me
I moved our ...
I moved my bed to a whole 'nother room
New pictures on the walls
Anything at all to
MAKE IT EASY

I wish you well
and wish you hell
all in the same
I'll wake from dreams and wonder,
"Oh what if I?
Couldn't I?
Shouldn't I?
Well maybe when he's gone"
Why couldn't you sleep alone?
MAKE IT EASY

Sure I've one song that hurt you
It never helped me feel BETTER NOW at all
I write for me not you
I don't need the crowds, the smoky rooms
I don't need the applause
Yet I thank God for the acceptance
I have found in strangers' hearts
for just singing of rejection
And if nothing more this tune
Will let you know I had to hold the hurt
It was all that I'd left of you
Well even that I'm letting go
I don't need to hurt no more
May God cushion both our falls
And somehow
MAKE IT EASY
