Story Behind The Song
We, Ivison, live in this culture and have experienced the very real costs of forming, believing in, and expressing unique ideas. We have found an equally very real pleasure in letting go of the dysfunctional baggage of needing cultural approval as we discover deeper, richer, more selfless ideas - and many others who share our openess and committment to change.
Song Description
We ("cultured creatures") are challenged by the song to not accept pressure toward conformity in our culture, but instead, counting the certain costs and consequences, find, embrace and fight for unique identity. The cadence of the intro and verse rhythms presents the "assembly-line", military-like imagery of a culture that expects conformity, while the lyrics cry out and plead for those "in line" to step out, step forward, and be themselves. The chorus mixes dark and light chords suggesting the pain and pleasure of choosing to move against the grain of conformity and express unique ideas.

Lyrics
torn (who we are)
mine and
my, my
cultured people
time and time again we turn
help it
can?t help
going back
again to where you began
all by myself
on?on my own
and we?re breaking apart
held on to pieces of who we are
this escaping is hard
torn for believing in who we are
who we are
move out
my, my
cultured creatures
are washing
washed up
intuitions
to go and
keep going
over and over and over again
just who we are
and we?re breaking apart
held on to pieces of who we are
this escaping is hard
torn for believing in who we are
believe in who we are
