Sleepy Eyed Joe

Story Behind The Song

In the town where I grew up, there were lots of odd and interesting characters - Bob the Cob, Snowball, Willie the Wheel, Venus, and so on. Today they would probably be locked up somewhere, but I count myself grateful for having had the chance to know them. I think the eccentrics among us can enrich our lives.

Lyrics

Sleepy Eyed Joe

Sleepy Eyed Joe, He?s a moving kind of slow
?Cause there ain?t no hurry in his world
Might go downtown might lay back down
It?s a matter of the moment and his mood
It really don?t matter, No it really don?t matter
Well it really don?t matter at all
Sleepy Eyed Joe?s got no place he has to go today

Carolina Red?s got a pain in his head
From the wine that he drank last night
His eyes want to close and his body wants to rest
He?s thinking maybe he just might
It really don?t matter, No it really don?t matter
Well it really don?t matter at all
Carolina Red?s got nothing to do today

Hey Joe, don?t you know?
You?re entitled to the rest you?ve earned
Hey Carolina don?t you worry ?bout tomorrow
It?ll come to you in its turn

Sentimental Sue?s got nothing else to do
Except to sit around and smile all day
Think about the past, sometimes she has to laugh
Was it ever really quite that way?
It really don?t matter, No it really don?t matter
Well it really don?t matter at all
Sentimental Sue?s got nothing to do today

Snowball Sam he?s a sweet talking man
Charm the ladies on a summer?s night
Whisper in their ears, all the things they want to hear
And he?s thinking maybe he just might
It really don?t matter, No it really don?t matter
Well it really don?t matter at all
Snowball Sam ain?t got no plans today

Hey Sue, ain?t it true?
You?re entitled to the rest you?ve earned
Hey Sam, don?t you make no plans
It?ll come to you in its turn

Sleepy Eyed Joe, He?s a moving kind of slow
?Cause there ain?t no hurry in his world
Might go downtown might lay back down
It?s a matter of the moment and his mood
It really don?t matter, No it really don?t matter
Well it really don?t matter at all
Sleepy Eyed Joe?s got no place he has to go today
Nowhere to go, for Sleepy Eyed Joe
Sleepy Eyed Joe, Sleepy Eyed Joe
Nowhere to go, for Sleepy Eyed Joe
