My Neighbors

Story Behind The Song

A song about my neighbors, from when I lived in Santa Monica.

Song Description

The first line of this song was inspired when one of my neighbors, Austin Peck (Days Of Our Lives, As The World Turns, One Life To Live), who was working on his lines. I then began describing the rest of my neighbors.

Lyrics

VERSE 1
There's a guy at the top of the stairs, he's got sands running through the hourglass
And the dude besides him, well, hardly ever speaks to me
There's a girly next door, she's looking for a job and a Jewish man approximately her age
And the folks 'cross the way, they got, like, 17 people living in a 1 bedroom apartment

There's a frenchman in the building next door, he can see through my bathroom window when it's open
Sometimes he makes creepy comments at my while I'm trying to read
There's some old folks, I see them walk their dogs in the morning, they've got three of them
And when I try to be friendly, they look at me like I'm a psycho

CHORUS 1
These are my neighbors
These are my neighbors
These are my neighbors
They live near where I live

VERSE 2
There's a wino in the alley, he sleeps in a cardboard refrigerator box
He only pays 300 a month, because we've got rent control
The landlord, he's a native of this town and he says things aren't like they used to be
He says it's too crowded now, as he shows me pictures of his 7 grown up procreating children

The new guy, he is one of those actor types
He's got a masters degree, he makes 10,000 a year
The nicest apartment below to a guy whose beeper goes off 100 times a day
He doesn't have a job and he makes more than the rest of us combined

REPEAT CHORUS 1

BRIDGE
Well, the people at the promenade like to sing and sell cheap stuff to tourists
Residents of West L.A. say they live in Santa Monica when in fact, they don't
If you're south of the 10, it means you've got less money than the rest of us
And everyone north of Wilshire thinks the sun shines out of their butt

VERSE 3
My roommate, I met him through an ad in the Recycler
He's a musician, too, when he's not helping crack babies
He's the perfect roommate, because I never see him at all, except for, you know, maybe once or twice a week
And his girlfriend's a Korean-American UCLA student whose parents don't know what they are dating

REPEAT CHORUS 1

CHORUS 2
Talkin' 'bout my neighbors
Talkin' 'bout my neighbors
These are my neighbors
They live near where I live
