When A Fair Wind Blows

Story Behind The Song

This song was written by candle light and kerosene lamp, while sitting by a wood-burning stove in January, 2007. A rare, hard freeze had hit West Texas, with ice knocking down 14 utility poles. We were without power or telephone service for three days.

Lyrics

WHEN A FAIR WIND BLOWS
By Edward Davis / Jan Davis

HIM: Since you've gone
Seems like the wind and snow
Have sure been blowing strong.
I got so cold
I never knew that winter
Would last so long.
A fog came rolling in.
Didn't think I'd ever see
The sun again.
I'm telling you friend
That's as cold as this old cowboy
Has ever been.

HER: Missing home.
Been too long since
I left you there alone.
A heavy toll.
I never thought that this war
Would last so long.
Choppers coming in
With choking dust
And dry hot wind.
Here with my friends
It's the toughest place your cowgirl
Has ever been.

First Chorus:

HIM: Got to keep on riding.
HER: Got to keep on fighting.
HIM: There's cattle lost in the blowing snow.
HER: A different kind of storm here, but I know
BOTH: I'll see you when a fair wind blows.

Lead Break:

Second Chorus:

HIM: Got to keep on riding.
HER: We got to keep on fighting.
HIM: I'll be breaking ice in the blowing cold.
HER: Though times are stormy,
Oh, don't you know
I'll see you when a fair wind blows.
HIM: I'll see you when a fair wind blows.
