Song Description

Story of how a woman found strength after enduring an emotionally abusive marriage.

Story Behind the Song

A woman whose husband has abandoned her emotionally and physically. She's lonely beyond words but still loves him and doesn't want to leave because she thinks she needs him and she's afraid to be alone. She feels "Helpless" and alienated by him. By the end of the song she realizes that she's strong enough to leave and deserves better, thus the last line, "maybe I don't need you."

"Helpless"
Written and Produced by Debra Mitchell-Adams (BMI)

Verse 1

I WAS JUST A GIRL
LONGING FOR SOME ARMS TO BE IN
IT'S A LONELY WORLD
I WANTED YOU TO RESCUE ME
FROM TIME AFTER TIME
OF FEELING ALONE
WITH YOU BY MY SIDE
AS I WATCHED YOU SLEEP
NEXT TO ME

Chorus

WHEN I NEED YOU THE MOST
YOU LEAVE ME
HELPLESS
WHEN I NEED US TO WORK
YOU LEAVE ME
HELPLESS
WHY CAN'T YOU FEEL ME?
WHY DO YOU JUST LEAVE?

Verse 2
IF I KNEW THE WAY
I WOULD TAKE MY HEART AND LEAVE HIM
LIFE IS A SHADE OF GREY
AND THE GRASS AIN'T ALWAYS GREEN
SO I LAY HERE
NIGHT AFTER NIGHT
MISSIN THE WAY
YOU USED TO HOLD AND WATCH ME DREAM
AS YOU FEEL TO SLEEP

Chorus

WHEN I NEED YOU THE MOST
YOU LEAVE ME
HELPLESS
WHEN I NEED US TO WORK
YOU LEAVE ME
HELPLESS
WHY CAN'T YOU FEEL ME?
WHY DO YOU JUST LEAVE?

Bridge
OUR VOWS MEANT EVERYTHING
THERE WAS NO WAY I WAS EVER GONNA LEAVE
I KEPT REACHIN FOR YOUR LOVE TO HELP ME
ALL YOU GAVE ME WAS A COLD AND LONELY RETREAT

Chorus (REPEAT X2)

WHEN I NEED YOU THE MOST
YOU LEAVE ME
HELPLESS
WHEN I NEED US TO WORK
YOU LEAVE ME
HELPLESS
WHY CAN'T YOU FEEL ME?
WHY DO YOU JUST LEAVE?
MAYBE I DON'T NEED YOU...
