Rock Bottom's Got a Basement

Story Behind The Song

After living in Las Vegas, I became aware of the pitfalls of people losing their money and then some while gambling. While gambling is an entertaining pastime, some gamblers couldn't stop and walk away. Some fell into that black hole of despair and rock bottom. Hense the name of this song.

Song Description

Rock Bottom's Got a Basement" is a cinematic blues ballad that follows a down-and-out risktaker through the underbelly of a gambler's despair. With vivid imagery and satirical bite, the song paints a world where luck is rigged, silence is deafening, and redemption is just a rumor. The lyrics unfold like a short film, gritty, poetic, and emotionally raw, anchored by a soulful vocal style in the vein of Chris Stapleton. It's storytelling at its most bruised and beautiful.

Lyrics

Rock Bottom's Got a Basement

Verse 1
I lit a match in a no smoke bar.
"What the hell mister!" You've gone way too far.
Don't play with fire in our palace of sin. Just place your bet if you're gonna stay in.
I looked nearby for some drink to cling to, one slam and bam I knew what I should do. Turn myself around and walk outside or place my bet and let Lady Luck ride.

Chorus
Rock bottoms got a basement, where good luck goes to die...yeah
No ladder built from lucky streaks, no redemption in disguise.
You can scream into the silence, but it just don't echo back,
Rock bottoms got a basement where marked cards are always stacked.

Verse 2
When I hit bottom, and compelled to sell my soul,
There's a trapdoor in the darkness to a deeper place to go.
Where losers are the losers who just never learned to fold,
They bet their bottom dollar, hoping luck is down the road.

Chorus
Rock bottom's got a basement, where good luck goes to die...yeah
No ladder built from lucky streaks, no redemption in disguise.
You can scream into the silence, but it just don't echo back,
Rock bottom's got a basement where marked cards are always stacked.

Bridge
But I ain't cryin'...
ain't feelin no pain...
Just watchin whisky drippin down a motel sink drain.
So if you see me around
In this old gamblin town,
I'll be Jones in for a game to settle me down. Mmmm

Short solo

Verse 3
I go down that trapdoor to darkness below,
where the silence hits harder than a sledgehammer blow.
Ain't no curtain call, no finale to show, just a loser eatin peanuts from a greasy wood bowl.

Outro
Rock bottom's got a basement, and I made it mine,
With lyrics of a song and a bottle of time.
If you hear me hummin through the floorboards below...that rock bottom basement's got nothin to show...
In that rock bottom basement there's no where to go.......but up.
