Song Description

Rosie and Zannie are the daughters and granddaughters of a great folk family out of Chicago. The Armstrongs. They carry with them a deep heritage, and yet of course had to strike out on their own. This song was written for them about their experience of coming of age as singers.

Lyrics

New Mown Hay
© Bill Burnett
The crickets are a chirpin' and the froggies are a hoppin'
The Birdies they are singin' like they'd like to wake the day
The planet is a turnin' and it shows no sign of stoppin'
Run Rosanna, Come and run away
Run Rosanna through the new mown hay
Run Rosanna won't you come away
Run Rosanna through the new mown hay

Papa headed south and got a job there cuttin cotton
Mama's flyin' north and there is nothin' left to say
All that came before will soon be gone but not forgotton
Run Rosanna come and run today
Run Rosanna through the new mown hay
Run Rosanna won't you come away
Run Rosanna through the new mown hay
Mama says Rosanna what became of Granny's locket?
You know she left it to you don't be throwin' that away
Rosanna says don't worry ma I've got it in my pocket
And I'll never drop it as I'm on my way
Never drop it in the new mown hay
Run Rosanna come and run away
Run Rosanna through the new mown hay
