Time for a Change

Story Behind The Song

I wrote this song in empathy for the women I love who have found themselves in this type of situation. My hope is that somehow the message will strengthen their self esteem enabling them to rise out of their abusive situations.

Song Description

Time for a Change is set in rural times before the awakening of femanisim. It is a first person account of the emotional and physical abuse that leads to the risky decision to leave the situation and start over on her own.

Lyrics

How many times have I told you
I'm sorry for all the things that you do
and I was younger and lonely
for someone to hold me
and saw only you
and I know it's not all of your fault how you act
you were raised to be cruel
you must be cruel to be kind
you were raw and all mine
and I suffered the view

Chorus
But it's been
Time for a change
I'm older in so many ways
it's easy to be old
without you
cause with dawn's another day

I've heard that same noise before
from that old kitchen door
and I thought that you'd left
I grabbed my keys and my purse
and I swore and I cursed
that I'd never come back
and every step to my car
wasn't echoed by far
of the torchure I felt
and how I'd sell my soul
for a place I could go
that would help me forget

Chorus
that it's been
Time for a change
I'm older in so many ways
it's easy to be old without you
cause with dawn's another day

You tell me that my kisses are cold
and I'm ugly and old
and then turn out the light
the words don't stick in your throat
like a memory of old
on a hot summer night
and on that damn dusty road
there's a turn that I know
I will drop out of sight
so take a good look around
it's just me and the ground
that I'm leavin' behind

Chorus
