99 Miles

Story Behind The Song

This song was written while I was driving home from a tour. I couldn't wait to see my wife and I wrote it in anticipation of pulling into my driveway. I saw a sign that said 99 Miles to Atlanta, GA which is where I lived at the time. So I wrote "Gonna pull in the drive way, pop on the emergency, and jump like a frog on the porch, take a long hot bath and a shot of tequila hear the sounds of my sweet baby's voice."

Song Description

This song is about the longing to go home and the excitement about pulling into your driveway and embracing your wife. It's about hard times and sticking together no matter what happens. Lyrics

99 MILES
99 MILES TO ATLANTA, GEORGIA
GOT ONE THING ON MY MIND
TWO WHOLE WEEKS ON THIS LONELY ROAD
FEELS LIKE I'VE SERVED SOME TIME
I'M GONNA PULL IT IN THE DRIVE WAY
POP ON THE 'MERGENCY
JUMP LIKE A FROG ON THE PORCH
TAKE A LONG HOT BATH AND A SHOT OF TEQUILA
HEAR THE SOUND OF MY SWEET BABY'S VOICE

BEEN A LOTTA LONG YEARS
OF SCRAPIN' AND A SCUFFLIN'
BUT TIME HAS PROVED ITSELF WELL
WE MIGHT NOT HAD A LOT OF FRILLS AND TASSLES
BUT LAWD KNOWS WE'VE GOT OURSELVES
I SAY IT'S BACK TO THE BASICS
AND WE'RE AT OUR BEST
CAUSE THAT'S HOW WE STARTED OUT
WE HAD LOVE THEN AND WE HAVE LOVE NOW
AND THAT'S GONNA PULL US OUT

CHORUS

JUST PUT OUT THE DOG AND RED UP THE HOUSE
CAUSE THE LAST TWO WEEKS HAVE BEEN HELL
SAID I'LL BE IN THAT CIRCLE BY ELEVEN O'CLOCK
SHE KNOWS TO EXPECT ME BY TWELVE
YA SEE THERE AIN'T TO MANY JOBS FOR A WORKIN CLASS HERO
SO I GOTTA DO THE BEST I CAN
THEY MAY STOP ME FROM WORKING BUT THEY CAN'T STOP THE LOVIN'
THAT HAPPENS 'TWEEN A WOMAN AND A MAN

CHORUS

THERE WAS A TIME WHEN I GOT UP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT
AND WATCHED AS SHE SLEPT IN OUR BED
THE ROOM WAS SO COLD NO FOOD IN THE FREEZER
THE TEARS WOULD SWELL IN MY HEAD
NOW WE'VE SEEN A LOTTA FACES AND WE'VE BEEN A LOTTA PLACES
AND THEY ALL SEEM TO FALL BY THE SIDE
THAT'S WHY THERE'S ONE THING IN LIFE I'D DO OVER AGAIN
I'D ASK YOU TO BE MY BRIDE
