Making, Making, Someday Made

Story Behind The Song

"Banat, Banat, Banjai" (Making, Making, Someday Made) is a Sanskrit phrase attributed to Lahiri Mahasaya, from the book, Autobiography of a Yogi, by Paramahansa Yogananda. When I was feeling completely unraveled from a bad breakup and a peiod of loss in my life, I repeated these words often. They helped me to wake up everyday, keep breathing in and out, and just keep going. At the time, I felt like so much had been stripped away from me, and I had to reinvent myself anew. A challenging task! I found inner strength by writing, and knew that if I could persevere and be patient through my "winter of discontent", I would emerge victorious, like the flowers in the last verse of the song, "Slumbering beneath the snow, flowers planted in a row, not forgotten, just delayed, making, making, someday made."

Song Description

This is a contemporary folk song, with a hopeful message about recovering from setbacks and looking toward the future. "Banat, Banat, Banjai" chanted at the end of the song is Sanskrit (Bengali) for "Making, Making, Someday Made." It is an encouraging phrase to remind us to keep striving, and someday we will see the change we are working towards. Most often, the best outcome isn't what we thought it would be. No matter how bad things may seem, never give up.

Lyrics

Sew my soul into my skin
Hurts like hell 'til grace sinks in
Mending rips that pulled apart
Take a deep breath and make a new start
Finding threads that I'd mislaid
Making, making, someday made

Heart unraveled, mind unwound
Limbs unhinged, footing unsound
Lost myself in a deep dark haze
A labyrinth of black and grey
Scratched by brambles where I strayed
Making, making, someday made

Making, making someday made
Sweet and sour, sun and shade
Round and round in serenade
Making, making, someday made

Distance in the rearview mirror
A different road approaching nearer
Can't go back to change the past
Nothing good becomes of that
Old wounds recede, memories fade
Making, making, someday made

Making, making someday made
Sweet and sour; sun and shade
Round and round in serenade
Making, making, someday made

Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring
Each season brings its offering
Slumbering beneath the snow
Flowers planted in a row
Not forgotten, just delayed
Making, making, someday made

Making, making someday made
Sweet and sour, sun and shade
Round and round in serenade
Making, making, someday made

Making, making, someday made,
Banat, Banat, Ban Jai*

*Sanskrit (Bengali) translation of "making, making, someday made."
