Song Description

Song about a writer who decides to write country music but discovers that in order to be able to really write about the subject you must first live it.

Lyrics

You Can't Write A Country Song
Peter Spencer Church 2006

When I was young, I tried so hard to write the perfect country song,
So with hope in my heart, I went to work with pen in my hand,
And I learned the right things to say, worked hard almost every day,
But it wasn't very long,
That I got some advice from a very wise old music man, and he said,

Son, you can't write a country song,
It must be born through life's blood, and sweat, and tears,
Son, you can't write a country song,
It must be chiseled out by living, over the years,

So I set my mind to do my best at this thing that they called life,
Oh I was young and wild and free,
But I finally settled down and took a wife,
And it wasn't very long before we had a baby child or two,
Oh we didn't have much, but we made do,

I worked long and hard for endless hours deep into the night,
Worked two jobs and overtime until the morning light,
Got us a house in the country even had a telephone,
Had a job and money but no time to have a home,

One year I lost my only son, and I almost lost my wife,
I almost took a gun to take my own life,
And I started drinking, and I lost my job,
And I know it's a shame, to see a grown man sob,

I've been so down I did not know which way was up,
Been on the streets a beggin' for change to fill my cup,
And it's takin' a lot of time and pain for me to finally understand,
Just what he meant, the words of that man, when he said that,
