Vulnerable

Story Behind The Song

I owe this song to one of my muses, my sister-in-law, Danielle. We were together at her home on a Sunday morning - she on the couch reading & meditating and I at the piano. Suddenly she said "Sometimes I feel so empty inside" at which point I started singing that in a line. I listened to her expand on that thought and the song kept coming out. Eventually I substituted the word "vulnerable" for "empty" and, well, the rest is here in the song. I think many of us have felt utterly alone at some point in our lives and vulnerable to whatever might be heading our way. All we can do, at those times, is "keep on breathing" and wait for "dreams of peace."

Lyrics

V1: Sometimes I feel so vulnerable inside
With no place to hide from the pain
Standing alone in this dusty field
With no shield from the rain
I see the storm - I feel it coming
Though I've been warned - can't start running
Caught up in paralyzing doubt
With no way out and no way home

V2: No suffering in heaven, so I've heard
That's the word on the street
If you're there before me, all I can say
Make sure you save me a seat
Close to the stage where the choir is singing
Songs of praise while bells are ringing
I hope I walk down that heavenly street
Where voices sweetly lull me

Bridge: I'm not alone - I know this and yet
Knowing's not the same as believing
Maybe one day the doubt will go away
Meanwhile I just keep on breathing
Keep on breathing

V3: I need someone to be my guide
Help me find a way out
Someone strong who will stand by my side
While I cry myself out
I feel the rain - I hope the flooding
Washes the pain - from eyes now shutting
Dreams of peace will come to me
Easily and always
