The Sea

Story Behind The Song

My family used to go to the shore in New Jersey every summer for a 2 week vacation. One year, I was awakened by a brilliant light coming from the corner of the room. I glanced at my sister who was next to me but she was sound asleep. I saw three figures dressed in robes in the corner. One of the figures spoke and told me that someone I barely knew who lived in our town was going to be OK. Then the light faded, the figures disappeared, and I somehow fell back asleep. I never told a soul about the experience but, a couple years later, wrote this song. Soon after, my family moved and I started my junior year in a new high school. I got a phone call from one of my friends left behind, informing me that the person whose name was mentioned in my dream had fallen during cheerleading practice and been rushed to a nearby hospital, suffering from a serious head injury. They didn't know if she was going to survive. Suddenly the message from my vision became clear and I replied to my friend "You're going to think I'm crazy but I know she will be alright." Turns out, the cheerleader suffered permanent brain injury but survived the accident. I never doubted the divine after that or the special gift I had miraculously been given. I will never forget the thrill of that experience. Later, in the studio, the arrangement Bill Bentley created included laying down track after track of me humming counter melodies and breathing loudly to emulate the tide. My brother, Scott, included this song in our second musical, "Devil May Care," and I was fortunate to get to sing it in the role of an angel.

Lyrics

The Sea

Last night I wandered across the sand
I heard voices like a great command
Singing a chorus in perfect harmony
It was the sea calling to me

She said, "Come, rest your weary body beside
My soothing, salty ebbing tide
Slumber within my enveloping embrace
And let my sea breeze kiss your face."

It was so peaceful I could not rise
And so I lay there, with my eyes
Beholding visions of my destiny
Afraid not to watch, afraid to see

I saw me dying, I saw me born
I saw me lonely, lost, and forlorn
I saw the Devil, I met the Lord
And the sorrow of living was my reward

Hold me tighter, this daughter of the sea
Hold me, mother, please love me
For in the salty tears you are crying
I hear my lover's sighing
I hear my lover's sighing
