Surrender

Story Behind The Song

After my son received his heart transplant and we all returned to our respective homes, we were besieged by memories of those moments of despair, even in moments of great relief and joy. At one point, during that siege, I remembered sobbing, from fear, anger, and despair as I sat in my car. I was suffering a true crisis of faith. In the midst of my tears I called out - "Why, God?" It stopped me dead in my tracks as I realized I must still believe in God if I were calling out to Him. Later, I asked my brother, "How could God do this?" to which he replied, "Even his own Son asked that question from the cross." Powerful! So I was inspired to attempt to express the absolute helplessness I had felt watching my son struggle to survive and the absolute surrender that came when I gave the outcome over to Him. When my son heard this song for the first time, he called me so excited and asked "How did you know what I was feeling?" I said "That's what I was feeling." We realized that, even though we had never shared these feelings out loud, we had shared them within. This was one of the songs my family asked be played at the memorial for my nephew, Wyatt. It is meaningful for my family and I hope it is for you.

Lyrics

Surrender

V1: I came to the precipice and looked within
Felt the weight of the pain that was breaking me
Instead of falling, I heard myself calling
To the one I thought had forsaken me

V2: Then I realized I still believed
Someone would answer my prayer
I saw a great light shining so bright
Through despondency and despair

Cho: I surrendered to a power so great
I surrendered - I just couldn't wait
To surrender to a love so divine
Let it be God's will, not mine

V3: Up till that moment I believed
I was the one in control
It makes me laugh to think I felt like that
When I really had none at all

Cho:

Bridge: Can you forgive me for doubting you?
Can you understand how I got lost?
Even your own son wondered where you'd gone
When he called out to you from the cross

V3: There comes a time in everybody's life
When the weight of the world hurts too much
When all hope seems lost or too great a cost
Give it over to his gentle touch

Cho:
