Maybe I Lied

Story Behind The Song

I got the idea that sometimes lying isn't really lying but, rather, just premature truthing. Let me explain. You tell someone you can't be what they need because you misinterpret what they need. Or you say "I can't do that" without realizing you can (you just never gave yourself credit for what "that" really is or for what you are truly capable of). So this song came about as a result of that kind of convoluted musing: What if you told someone you were incapable of loving them, thinking that is true when, in reality, you could? Were you lying when you said it? My favorite part of this song is the ending with the relentless "You made me a liar."

Lyrics

Maybe I Lied

V1: Remember when I told you I could never love you or anybody else
How could I ever love someone when I can't even love myself
Well I meant it when I said and I don't regret it 'cause I really thought I never could
When I looked you in the eye, I didn't even try to pretend I ever would

Cho: Well, I lied I lied
Does it count as a lie if you don't know it's wrong when you say it
Can you really blame me for losing a game when I don't know how to play it
Maybe I lied when I said it - I just didn't know it till now

V2:I took on the role of savior and I always gave more than I received
I was the one that everybody counted on - I might have been a little naive
I didn't think I could lean on someone when everyone leaned on me
I thought i was tough and strong enough to be what others wanted me to be

Cho: Well, I lied I lied
Maybe I lied when I said it - I just didn't know it till now

Bridge: I didn't want to need anyone so I pretended that I didn't
If I ever felt afraid or alone, I successfully hid it
But, of course, the fallacy caught up to me as lies inevitably do
It might have been true as far as I knew but that was before I met you

V3: Well the moral of the story is there's no glory in denying a great romance
I didn't intend to ever offend you and I'd really like a second chance
To show you I can love you like you deserve to be treasured and adored
You opened my eyes - there won't be any lies between us anymore
