It Takes A Village

Story Behind The Song

When we saw everything we fought for in the 1960's slipping away, we needed to express our concerns. We started by contacting elected officials. Those who responded, did so with a form letter. Then they started sending daily emails asking for money. We tried writing letters to newspapers and other media news. None of those even sent a form letter response. Ultimately, my husband and I thought we had found a voice in songwriting. Well, we've expressed our opinions but it isn't doing anything to change what's happening. And the reality is, it doesn't seem an elderly couple can change the world or stop what's happening or make any noticeable impact. This song is born from the frustration of knowing what needs to be fixed but realizing we cannot do it alone.

Song Description

A lifetime fixer realizes he cannot fix this alone. It will take a village.

Song Length 3:26 Genre Blues - Traditional

Lyrics

Verse 1]
I've always been the person who fixed what is broken,
I'd go and fix it, no need for a request to be spoken,
Every broken piece, I stitched it right,
But this time it's bigger, I'm lost in the fight.
If I failed at first, I knew I'd try again,
Determined in my soul, I could handle the strain,
With each hurdle I faced, it made me stronger still,
But this moment I feel, it's too heavy to fill.

[Chorus]
Now I can't do it alone, the load's too great,
Trying to carry the weight, while I contemplate,
I wanted to do it, oh, I tried with all my might,
But it's gonna take a village to try and set this right.
A world coming together, to smooth out the strife,
We're fighting for our future, the essence of life.

[Verse 2]
So let's gather our courage, our dreams, and our hopes,
Shatter the ceilings, learn how to cope,
This world needs healing from the troubles we brew,
It starts with a question: can I count on you?
We'll stitch every wound, let the love overflow,
With the strength of our spirits, together we'll grow.

[Chorus]
Now I can't do it alone, the load's too great,
Trying to carry the weight, while I contemplate,
I wanted to do it, oh, I tried with all my might,
But it's gonna take a village to try and set this right.
A world coming together, to smooth out the strife,
We're fighting for our future, it's the essence of life.

[Outro]
So here's my invitation, my heart on my sleeve,
Join me in this journey, together we'll believe,
We have the power to change, to heal and to mend,
It's gonna take a village. We have a world to defend.
