Song Description

When one gives love, one expects love back. If love cannot be given back, then there is no love. Love, in this view, presupposes mutuality.

Story Behind the Song

My sister gave me a book several years ago about the life of Mozart. In one passage in the book, he describes his view that love, when given, presumes love in return -- a desired quid pro quo. I appreciated this hook from the distant past.

You reply that you love me, too, but I'm not certain you do
I need to be sure, secure, that love will endure
So you need to say it like you mean it if you truly love me
Because it's true that love is not free

(That) Love gives only to receive love in return
A love that's only make believe could never learn
That when I give my love to you, I need you to love me back
Love must be more than an act because love gives only to receive

Let love live or let it die; I don't need any beautiful lies
A one-sided love could never last; no future, no past
Love is precious to me, never free; what else could it be?
Just open your eyes so you can see

Of course, I hope I'm very wrong
Nothing would please me more than believing our love is strong

Yes, love gives only to receive
