Story Behind The Song

It doesn't havea hook that repeats the title, I know--but it follows the poem--and somehow it's one of those songs that just works the way it is, I think (kids love it, I've found.)

Song Description

One of several songs I've based on poems in my award-winning book of children's poetry published by Penguin (Outside the Lines: Poetry At Play) All the poems (and thus the songs) concern different forms of playing.

VERSE
Oh, yes I know we're not supposed to jump in here;
Our dad told us to keep things neat
(I guess he made that pretty clear --
"Don't spread the leaves all down the street").

VERSE
But when we see them piled up high,
Our legs tell us it's time to fly,
Then something in us spins around
And makes us race across the ground . . .

CHORUS
And isn't this why leaves start falling?
Just to end up here, and calling:
"Jump into this yellow-red,
this crisp October feather-bed! ?-"

(There's just one season for this fun;
We'll rake 'em up when we are done!)
"Come dive into this golden heap
of happy landings, soft and deep!"
