If the rain forest were music it would be SOMA MESTIZO. On their latest CD PEEPSHOW, Soma Mestizo weaves enduring magic from an unlikely combination of drums, guitar, conga, vocals and the secret ingredient of the didgeridoo. Their cauldron simmers with trance inducing rhythms and erotic, stretched out arrangements. The didgeridoo works as an exotic sound and as the bass figure underpinning of the music. The music draws from diverse world cultures; mostly from the hot zone. There is nothing cold or blue here. This is where heat emanates from the sternum. Drummer Ping Ting (David Pohl) gets an incredible musical variety of sounds out of his percussion setup. He uses drums and cymbals of different pitches as compositional elements. No mere time keeper, he uses a full pallette of rhythms, accents and colors. His hands are relaxed and loose but he grabs your tailbone. Birthed in the Studio of Tuff Sound Recording, Soma Mestizo,
has been in existence since March 1996. They have shed
our earlier sound of midi-based trip hop,
for a more performable organic blend.

Soma Mestizo performs extensively throughout Pittsburgh. From Coffee shops,
to Rock against Racism rallies, to Galleries; they love to play our music.
Their very first gig, included a visit from Zero Hour Records, from NY, for
whom they also did a showcase for. They opened up for De la Soul, performed
at a Heart Benefit featuring the poet, Sapphire, and played the party for
The Carnegie International Artists.

Soma Mestizo has performed on local radio stations, WRCT and WYEP, as well
as, the local television show, ONQ. Soma Mestizo’s music has been featured
on the soundtrack for the documentary by Curtis Reaves, "The John and Sarah
Project". It will also be featured in the upcoming film , "Quiet Lives", by
Chris Ivey.

They have played in Detroit, BAR 13 in NY , and Bradford University. But,
they must confess, they yearn to stretch across the lake, towards London,
Germany, and Mt. Fuji. With an International Festival acceptance
