Squeaky Clean

Thumbing there collective noses at the nineties trend of writing songs riddled with screaming angst, Pushstart Wagon has produced a debut owing far more to the power pop sensibilities of bands like Wonderstuff than much of anything which would be remotely considered to appear at Lollapalooza. Actually, picture a fairly even blend of the aforementioned Wonderstuff and PlankEye and you've got a good idea of what's going on here. Pushstart Wagon's formula is a simple one. They write fun songs packed to the gills with catchy hooks. Then they play them loud. It's simple, yes, but it is also effective. After the first time through, I found three of four of these tunes running circles in my brain. Three or four more joined the first batch on the second listen. And so on. And not only are they fun, but songs such as "Open", "I Will (Run for Cover)" and "Affection" show deep concern for social and spiritual issues. They've got some great hooks, they're tight, they're well produced (compliments of Andy Prickett), and they've got a sense of humor. What more do you want? This is easily one of the best new bands of the year. Todd Brown, Seven Ball Magazine
