On the surface, “Tell Your Mother” is thirteen songs of rich, vibrant, power pop-meets-60’s-AM-radio sunshine. But McGarvey’s approach is both sugar and smart. His pop melodies disguise a darker sensibility, where wry melancholy and laugh-out-loud lyrical musings mix with scrupulously observed stories populated with broken, haunted characters. “Tell Your Mother” is a powerful blend of influences from the past and present – as if a 60’s AM radio is broadcasting a soundtrack for the new millennium
