The Antikythera Device is the work of Troy Gatrell, a multi-instrumentalist from Roanoke, Virginia. The sound is one sculpted from diverse musical influences, but also subject matter such as science, math, and physics. Imagine if Radiohead, Tortoise, The Mars Volta, and bunch of chemistry textbooks were all walking down a hallway, bumped into each other, and all got chocolate in each other’s peanut butter and vice-versa (you know the commercial). Combine that with a large helping of complete originality, and you have The Antikythera Device. The goal is simple: create a sound that is brand new yet recognizable, and experimental yet accessible. A very noteworthy amount of thought goes into each note in an attempt to achieve this goal, and you can hear it for yourself through the four self-produced albums TAKD has put out since April of 2004. With a fifth in the works, it’s hard to imagine what you’ll be hearing next.
