Leigh Taylor is an engaging man with an odd sense of humor, and his songs/concerts have been called "jaw droppers". He's married with one son, and leads worship at North Coast Church in Vista, Ca.

I Was Born A Poor Black Child. .

It all started in Los Angeles, California in 1956. A talented teen named Barbara Taylor was a contestant on the TV talent show “Rocket to Stardom”. She thought the idea having of younger brother sing "Sixteen Tons" on the show was cute. He sang all the time, and even made up his own songs. Sam and Helen Taylor agreed to let their child do what came naturally to him and at the age of four, T. Leigh Taylor stepped out on the stage and walked off with first prize. Piano, trumpet, art and tap dance lessons followed, as did numerous plays and a year-long stint as a child disc jockey (!). It was fun, but young Leigh wanted to sing.

In the late sixties, Leigh had a short but significant conversation with his father after being caught playing air-guitar. It had a dramatic impact upon Leigh's life and would forever affect his attitude toward music. The gist of it was simple: "if you only listen to is rock n' roll, you can't call yourself a music lover because there's a whole lot more to music than just rock n' roll."

Leigh was dumbfounded. He neither understood nor embraced his father’s statement until a revival in April of '71 led Leigh to become a Christian. Two months later, Leigh wrote the first of hundreds of songs reflecting his faith in and love for his Lord.

Today, Leigh's approach to song writing bears little resemblance to that of most singer-songwriters. He doesn't limit himself to writing in one style of music. For him, a song’s style is more dependent on its lyric content and attitude than on anything else, though it is clear that he is partial to Caribbean and Afro-Cuban music. Then there's his use of humor and choice of subject matter. He writes about everything from finding salvation in the Lord Jesus to Christians committing suicide. "I used to worry," he told us, "about how people would react to a song like 'Egbert and Bertha', because I didn't hear any other songs out there like it. But both the Lord and my pastor assured me that all I needed to do was listen to and obey the voice of the Lord and to be the man I am in Him. That’s fine with me 'cause I have no idea of how to be anybody else." To hear Leigh’s versatility and depth, listen to a few of his songs: for instance, "Single Purpose", "Never Mind" and the blistering "Saints and Sinners". Yes, Gertrude, it's true: he wrote them all. But his intent is not to be a musical chameleon for Jesus. "I play, sing and write songs because the Lord wired me this way from the womb. But actually, my heart is in ministry; otherwise I'd just stay home and try to impress and amuse my family and friends!
