Julia Biel was born and raised in the London suburbs and won a place at Oxford University to study languages. Once there, she jammed and performed with Andy Cato, (now one half of Groove Armada), Zoe Rahman (award-winning British jazz pianist) and has since become well-known on the jazz circuit in the UK having won Perrier Jazz Vocalist of the Year in 2000. She then went on to tour as lead vocalist with m-base and Steve Coleman influenced pianist Robert Mitchell, with his group ‘Panacea’.

After a while touring with Robert Mitchell, she realised she was not content singing music so extremely challenging to the listener and wanted to create and sing more direct music. It was then that she really began to focus on the art of songwriting and the result is a growing catalogue of solo-penned alternative pop/rock tunes with some r&b leanings that will form a fre
