John's Bio...

John grew up in Amsterdam, Holland, where his dad was freelancing as an opera singer. While in Holland, John learned about music in church and at home - his mom is now an elementary school music teacher.

He moved to the states in 1995, and ended up in Wisconsin in 1998, where he attended Verona High School. During high school, John played in the Wind Ensemble, Jazz ensemble, Pep band, and several "garage" bands with his friends, performing at talent shows and in backyards. The high school ensembles performed a concert tour of Europe in 2002.

In high school, John fell in love with the music of Phish and the whole jam band thing, spending a lot of time listening to and playing their music. John's other favorite style was hip-hop - he has always enjoyed rapping, beatboxing, and analyzing the samples and poetry of good hip-hop.

When John arrived at UW-Madison to earn his music degree, he felt he was lucky to have been accepted after his audition - he was to study marimba and concert percussion that he had virtually no experience in, as he had spent most of his time in high school on jam bands and hip-hop.

Over the next four years, John was exposed to much more music than he ever though imaginable and learned the subtleties of classical music and music theory. He played in the World Percussion Ensemble and excelled in Afro-Cuban and Brazilian drumming and singing. He also participated in over 10 other ensembles, from Contemporary Chamber ensemble, to the jazz bands.

Over the course of his degree, John became involved in booking, promoting, and performing as a full time musician. He paid for all of college by playing drums in the WI national guard band, and teaching lessons.

John currently enjoys a busy musician's life, playing 4-6 nights per week, teaching, rehearsing, practicing, listening, and staying healthy.
