In April 2006 Joanna launched her first EP "slow, secret smile" featuring seven of her original tunes. Her songs express bittersweet takes on love, the search for independence and a novel view of working life as “she wanders easily from seductive and blue to a playful, almost cabaret, style” (The Courier Mail, Brisbane, 20/4/06).
Her jazz inspirations include: Diana Krall, Cassandra Wilson, Kurt Elling and Cole Porter, and she is also strongly influenced by Tori Amos, Bjork and Ben Folds.
Under the support of The Lord Mayor's Performing Arts Fellowship in 2004, Joanna traveled to France to study voice and acting with Pantheatre. Pantheatre's classes explore the unification of the singing and speaking voice, and encourage the development of a personal style. She has also studied physical theatre with The Suzuki Company in Japan.
